The marriage/ Le mariage
The big sister in the host family of Marie, Izzy, Akim and Latif was married recently. We invited the Kabeela team to share the experience of a Burkinabe wedding with us.
La
grande sœur dans la famille d’accueil de Marie, Izzy, Akim et Latif s’est
mariée récemment. Nous avons invité l’équipe de Kabeela pour partager l’expérience
d’un mariage Burkinabè avec nous.
The day before the wedding, all the men
came to prepare the meat for the wedding meal and the women prepared the
vegetables. The bride put henna on her legs and hands and had her hair braided.
On the day of the wedding she would wear several outfits; one in the pang of
the wedding, one in the morning and one to move to her husband’s house. The key
idea is that she should be dressed in entirely new clothing for her new life as
a wife.

On the day of the wedding, the guests
arrived in the morning and left very late at night. First, as the guests arrive,
they give their wedding gifts. The wedding gifts were piled on the porch, later
they would be packaged up to go with the bride to the husband’s house.
Le jour du mariage, les
invités sont arrivés pendant la matinée et sont parties très tard le soir. D’abord,
les invités ont donné les cadeaux aux mariés. Les cadeaux étaient placés sur la
terrasse, plus tard ils seraient emballés pour aller avec la grande sœur chez
son mari.
There were so many guests that we ate lunch with in the next door neighbour’s garden. Everyone is invited to come and eat at
Burkinabé weddings. The women danced outside the house. We attempted to dance
with them but were not very good.
Il y avait tant des invitées
que la cour voisine a été demandée pour la réception. Tout le monde est invité
de venir et manger aux mariages des Burkinabès. Les femmes ont dansé devant devant
le portail de la maison. Nous avons essayé de danser avec eux, mais nous
n’avons pas réussi.
In the evening, the family of the groom
arrive to collect the bride. The wedding guests help load all the presents into
the minivan which will move her to her new home. The husband does not come
himself. Before they leave with the bride, the women of the husband’s family
sing at the women of the bride’s family. There was a lot of clapping, crying and singing.
Dans la soirée, la
famille du mari est arrivée pour ramener la grande sœur. Les invités aident à
embarquer les cadeaux dans le mini- car
qui va emmener la mariée à sa nouvelle maison. Le mari ne vient en personne.
Avant qu’ils partent avec la mariée, les femmes de la famille du mari chantent avec celles de la grande sœur. L’on chante, tape les mains, et crie de joie.
The bride moves to her husband’s house with
an older woman and a young girl accompanying her. For her first seven days as
married women she is not allowed to leave the house. The young girl is to go
out to the shops for her and help her round the house, the older woman is to
provide advice. On the seventh day, the bride will cook and sauce (the main
local dish) for the family of her husband and be fully accepted into the
family.
La femme déménage chez
son mari avez une femme plus âgée et une jeune fille. Pendant la première
semaine, la femme n’a pas le droit de sortir la maison. La jeune fille va au
magasin pour elle et l’aide dans la maison. La vieille dame fournit les
conseils. Le septième jour, la femme cuisine du tô et du sauce (le plat populaire régionale) pour la
famille de son mari et entre la famille complètement.
It shall be odd not to have our big sister
around the house, but we wish her all the best for her new married life!
Ce sera
bizarre de ne pas avoir notre grande sœur à la maison, mais on la donne nous
meilleurs vœux pour sa nouvelle vie
marie.
